Achieving the Highest Valued VMware VCP Certifications

VMware VCP certifications are good forever, and they do not expire. In 2018, VMware launched a new certification naming convention that adds the year you obtained the certificate to the certification name. While VMware certifications do not stop any longer, it is clear to see how new a VMware certification is with this new naming convention.

Previously, VMware certifications were valid for two years, and you could renew a VMware certification by taking a new, different VMware certification. While many are relieved the two-year expiration is gone, it is still essential for IT professionals to make sure they are up to date on the products they are using.

A Summary of VMware Certification

While the nature of VMware certification can be slightly tricky if it is your first time seeing into it, the truth is it does not have to be hard. The VMware certification path and the process can be broken down into four simple steps:

  • Take a VMware Authorized Training Course
  • vSphere Foundations and VMware Certified Professional (VCP) Exams
  • VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) Design and Deployed Exam
  • VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) Certification Process

If you set a goal of getting a VMware certification, try not to get frustrated if it takes longer than you expected. Let’s face it, we all acknowledge life happens, and sometimes things get in the form of study time. It is essential to remember your goals are allowed to evolve.

The best advice I can provide is that if you are set on the path of VMware certification, it is all about more than VMware technologies at the end of the day. You will be affected by other areas of the IT infrastructure, and require more than just technical skills to make the full VMware certification journey.

What Are VMware VCP Certifications?

VCP reaches for VMware Certified Professional and is often considered the entry-level certification for technical professionals. There is the optional VCA that happens before it, but that certification is more geared towards marketers and sales reps attending to learn how to put VMware solutions in their market. That said, however, the VCA can be a great opening point if you remember nothing about VMware and finally move on to VCP certification.

Also, deserving noting is that all VMware certifications are broken down into tracks. To complete the VCP certification process, you will have to select one of these tracks as an elected and pass a foundation exam as well as an exam targeting your chosen elective.

These tracks are designated as follows:

  • Data Center Virtualization (DCV): This track focuses on the on-premises infrastructure technologies such as ESXi, vCenter, and more.
  • Network Virtualization (NV): This track concentrates on VMware NSX. NSX is a virtualization technology from VMware that is centered on the networking stack and associated security.
  • Cloud Management and Automation (CMA): This track concentrates on VMware’s Suite of cloud/hybrid-cloud technologies such as the vCloud Suite, and vRealize.
  • Desktop and Mobility (DTM): This track focuses on VMware’s VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) technologies contained within VMware Horizon.
  • Digital Workspace (DW): This track focuses on Workspace One, which is a VMware product that is designed to run apps on any device by integrating access control, application management.

Again, as part of the VMware VCP certification process, you will choose one of these tracks for your elective exam. Then the acronym for your chosen specialty will be added to your VCP designation. For example, if you decided to concentrate on VMware NSX and reached the Network Virtualization exam along with the foundations’ exam, your VCP would be displayed as VCP-NV. This eases employers know what your specific focus is within the VMware ecosystem.

Also worth regarding are VCAP (VMware Certified Advanced Professional) and VCDX (VMware Certified Design Expert). These are both advanced certifications above and beyond the VCP designation that gives the highest level of mastery in a given track. We would not cover these advanced certifications further here, but they are something to aspire too if you are looking to go beyond the VCP certification eventually.

There are many VMware certifications. However, the VCP is often the one that is informed about the most. The VCP certification is the first element on the road to getting the more expensive tier VMware certifications.

What Are Covered in the VCP Exams?

The easiest way to see what is included in each of the exams is to take a look at the exams.

I have listed the main ones below:

  • VCP Foundations Exam
  • VCP-DCV Exam
  • VCP-NV Exam
  • VCP-CMA Exam
  • VCP-DTM Exam
  • VCP-DW Exam

How Much Does VCP Certification Cost?

As you have no difficulty been able to surmise from the title of this blog post, it is not cheap. This is due to a few different factors.

The VMware VCP Certification needs two exams: one at $125 and another at $250, totaling $375. However, the $125 exam is often included in the terms for number 2, so we will call this an even $250.

Many will have their employer supporting them, but what if you are looking to get VMware certified to help increase your job prospects. That $4500 is not cheap, especially if you are currently looking for a job. That course demand has become something of a pain point amongst the VMware community, and those looking to get in.

One does not have to dig too far to find some discernable angst in the community over the cost. There are many sites where you will find said angst, but I found this one the most interested.

Career Chances for VMware VCP and Salary Expectations

Overall, career candidates will notice an uptick by having the VCP certification. Virtualization skills are always in demand, and they play a role in more advanced cloud-focused certifications.

Company Prospects for VMware VCP Certification

There are also some suggestions for service providers looking at the VCP certification. Your customers see for organizations that can afford VCP-level expertise. Not only does that help you maintain existing customers, but you could also bring in new prospects that you would not normally have been able to.

Additionally, it is worth considering that VMware gives incentives in the form of cheaper pricing for those organizations with more VCPs on staff.

How Long Does the VMware VCP Certification Last?

There can be no talk of value without knowing how long said cost is going to last. There was a time when VMware would need re-certification every two years, but VMware has decreased this requirement recently. While single version changes are not too loud, expecting your VCP certification to cross multiple version releases over 3 to 5 years is likely unrealistic - plan on having to retest every 3 to 5 years depending on freedom flow. Also note that you will not have to take the needed coursework, as you only have to accept that once.

Is the VMware VCP Certification Worth it?

It certainly is a lot of money if you are not able to take a company to pay it for you, but if you think the importance within the industry, how well known the qualification is. It does not matter if you are an individual looking to increase your career prospects, or a company seeming to add more VMware knowledge on staff to get into the VMware Partner Network. The VCP Certification is worth it despite the hefty price tag.
